Killer Apps Help Take Surfer Obama To The White House

November 5, 2008

Perhaps Blade should refrain from disclosing any hint of political allegiance, but he cannot but say that he believes the election of Barack Obama as president-elect of the United States (he will take office as 44th president on 20 January, 2009) to be A Good Thing.

Let’s leave it at that and move swiftly on to this excellent story from CourierPostOnline, highlighting the role text messaging and iPhone apps played in Obama’s campaign and demonstrating how newsrooms could benefit by using the same technology. As the author, Ted Mann, says: “If the overall effort to coordinate newsrooms via text and mobile were any bit as effective as the Obama campaign has been, maybe the newspaper business could find a way to thrive again after all.”

Yet again, the value of embracing what the Web 2.0 world has to offer is clear, but meanwhile, to what extent was the surfers’ vote important in Obama’s election? It probably had little effect but Blade has it on good authority that many of the good people of Hawaii voted for Obama after this shot, of him emerging from the sea having been bodysurfing, was released. Good work, and not for the first time, by the image makers.
